   CITUMA

For the Mamos or Kogui priests, direct descendants of the Tayronas, Citurna is not just another mountain in our geography, it is the home of the world and the mother of all the races and things that inhabit it; a pillar of the universe and backbone of the cosmos.

According to Kogui mythology, first, there was the sea; an eternal sea, deep and dark, without life or anything else. Then the Universal Mother, Naboba or Shibalaneuman, mistress of all ancestors, created light, and life emerged with its first sparkles. Every topographical feature, the lagoons, the rivers, and their mouths, the great trees, and their animals have a symbolic and spiritual value. This mountain is full of energies that determine the life of mankind and the universe in general. Damage caused by this spiritual energy necessarily has repercussions on all other things and beings on Earth and in the stars. This is the "Law of the Mother", this is the "Law of Antigua".

In the Sierra, four different indigenous groups have inherited the traditions and knowledge of the Tayronas. They are the "big brothers", the sentinels of the Mother's house, among whom the spiritual heritage is preserved. The direct descendants of the Tayronas are the Koguis or Kággabas, the spiritual guides par excellence of the other tribes of the Sierra: the Arsarios or Wiwas, the Arhuacos or Ijkas, and the Kankuamos. The other inhabritants of the world are the "little brothers".

Today, the Mamos are the intermediaries between the Mother, the spiritual and sacred, and men. They direct and are the guarantors of indigenous behavior, as they ensu that the laws are obeyed. Their mission is to take care of the created world, to ensure that the cosmic cycles are fulfilled and are regular so that the plagues of the crops and the illnesses of men do not destroy life. The Mamo is the guide of all the daily affairs of the indigenous man, he defines and "divines" each of the events and happenings of the domestic life of his vassals. Everything is determined by the "Law of Origin" which is the one defined by the Mother, a law that is above everything else and that the Mamos transmit from generation to generation every night in the temples of each village.

Divination" and "pagamento" are two recurrent and traditional practices among the indigenous groups of the Sierra Nevada. The first procedure is carried out with spiritual "thought" between the Mamo and the Dueños or lords of the Mother, according to the requirements and requests of the interested party. The divination is done with "archaeological beads" - tubular necklace stones - which are immersed in natural rock concavities or molas filled with spring water and the Mamo interprets the answers to the questions asked, according to the bubbles that come out of the biconcave perforations of the immersed bead. The "pagamento" consists of making offerings to the owners of the Mother to ask for her favors or the resolution of personal, social, or administrative matters of the members of the group; it is carried out in moorlands, lagoons, and sacred sites.

The temples are also considered architectural spaces that symbolize, with their beehive shape, not only great Nevada but also the female engendering organ. In this large, dark space called "Cansamaría", the men of each village meet with the Mamos to carry out the ceremonial liturgy for the Universal Mother and for the land where we live.
