Land of Ancestral Knowledge

An excellent short alternative to Ciudad Perdida, this route allows you to explore archaeological terraces of the ancient Tayrona civilization while enjoying tropical rainforest landscapes, crystal-clear rivers, and a meaningful cultural encounter with the indigenous communities who inhabit this sacred territory.

WHAT TO BRING?
  • Small or medium backpack.

  • Light hiking clothes and a long-sleeve shirt with long pants for the evenings.

  • Comfortable walking shoes (hiking boots or running shoes).

  • Flip-flops, small towel, and swimsuit.

  • Insect repellent and sunscreen.

Day 1

Pick-up from your accommodation between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m. and transfer to Calabazo, where the group will meet at the trail entrance around 7:00–7:20 a.m..

The trek begins with an approximately 2.5-hour hike to the village of La Lisa, including a stop at the sacred stones of Donama. From there, the trail continues through tropical rainforest, offering scenic views of the Sierra Nevada and traditional coffee farms.

Lunch will be served along the route. In the afternoon, you will arrive at the archaeological site of Bunkuani, where there will be time to explore the terraces and learn about the history of the ancient Tayrona civilization.

After the visit, the group will return along the same trail to the accommodation, where the first night will be spent in beds.

Day 2

The day begins early with a cup of coffee at sunrise, followed by breakfast. The trek continues with an approximately 6 km hike through scenic landscapes, passing local farms and indigenous territory until reaching the Kogui village of Teiku.

Here, you will take part in a cultural exchange with the community, learning about traditional weaving, the making of indigenous backpacks, and the cultural significance of the coca leaf. Lunch will be served along the way, followed by time to rest.

In the evening, dinner will be shared in a traditional Kogui house, where you will also spend the second night resting in hammocks.

Day 3

The day begins with breakfast in the Teiku indigenous village, surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the Sierra Nevada. Before departing, you will take part in a small farewell ceremony with the Kogui community, a meaningful moment to thank the territory and the people who shared their culture during the journey.

The adventure continues with a two-hour hike down the mountain, following jungle trails and scenic landscapes until reaching Mary Nelsy’s house. Here, a traditional lunch will be served, along with time to relax and reflect on this unforgettable trekking experience in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
